Behind the Music

As soon as I got involved with The Outlaw Ocean Music Project, I started writing down all the ideas that came to my mind on a piece of paper. After only a few nights of reading Ian’s book and watching the reporting videos, everything started to shape together and I constructed a whole storyboard that inspired these three songs. Through these tracks, I wanted to construct a journey through The Outlaw Ocean. It starts off with setting sail into the unknown sea — you know there’s peril ahead but you also have a glimpse of hope and courage. The second song is meant to convey what happens when you actually run into those perils, and how to overcome these obstacles. The last song is meant to be the crew heading back to port, feeling accomplished and that their journey was successful, but knowing there’s still an endless fight ahead of them.

Working on this project truly changed my perspective of the ocean. I’ve always known it was a dangerous place, but reading some of the horrors that happen at sea truly shocked me. It’s hard to believe much of this stuff still happens today, and it’s important to bring it to light. Consuming all the elements of The Outlaw Ocean Project has been incredibly moving, and it’s remarkable to see how this team is doing something to make a difference. I feel very grateful to play a small role in it.
