Behind the Music

Using some of my own voice recordings, I tried to emulate the drama, suspense, and terror Ian undoubtedly experienced on the ocean while reporting for this book. Each chapter keeps you on the edge of your seat, as is the case with the chapter, “Storming the Thunder.” While this particular chapter ended on a more positive note, I want people to feel the anarchy of the sea and make them understand the 71 percent of the world they likely aren’t paying enough attention to.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
