Behind the Music

Since I am interested in women’s rights and self-determination, I find “Adelaide’s Voyage” very touching. Rebecca Gomperts and her team are doing very important work. Although this particular story is hopeful, many of the chapters in the book evoke sadness and the feeling of being paralyzed. I try to convey these melancholy feelings in my songs by using mostly synth pads instead of samplings. My goal is to transport my feelings into the music, while also allowing the listener to be emotionally impacted in his or her own way.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
