Behind the Music

The story of the seas is one of highs and lows — an ebb and flow of constant struggle and danger, as well as beauty and serenity. As such, I created compositions that reflected these tense feelings as well as the beauty and uplifting feelings represented by those who tirelessly fight these crimes at sea. I wanted to replicate these emotions and depict the unknown battle happening every day on our oceans.

About Jon Kennedy

Described as, “Almost certainly one of the three most talented men hailing from Stockport, U.K.,” Jon Kennedy is a man on a musical mission. He’s been circumnavigating the planet with his music since 2001 and the journey continues. Jon has earned a place in the downtempo, beats, breaks and electronic scene that continues into 2017, new respect and admiration from today’s audiences and from the new generation of producers and DJs, which shows us the strength of sound Jon and his Record Label produce.

He has amassed more than three million unique recorded plays on LastFM and tens of thousands of fans and followers on social network sites. Now with his own record label, The Jon Kennedy Federation, JK has no plans on going anywhere.

After a stint with Brighton-based Tru Thoughts Recordings, Jon joined the Grand Central family in the autumn of 2002. Bred a stone’s throw away from Grand Central HQ, his childhood in Stockport was characterized by exposure to new and interesting music, as a function of his parents’ enthusiasm for the pioneering artists of their day. Jon cites Peter Frampton, Electric Light Orchestra, David Essex and Geoff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds” as early influences. His taste would in part also be shaped by his brother’s musical excavations, which brought him into contact with more guitar-centric bands like KISS and AC/DC.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
