Behind the Music

I want my music to convey hopefulness and the bittersweet. The ocean is so vast and unknown, and it is a place full of crimes, unexplored territory and harshness that is not to be underestimated. But the stories of Sealand and the Adelaide show that the ocean can also be a place of refuge and safety, which brings me happiness and promise. In particular, when reading “A Rusty Kingdom,” I experience a sense of freedom. It is a fun chapter to read because it seems like the guy just creates his own surreal adventure, which moves me in some sort of way. With my music, I want to combat the isolation and fear and bring out this sense of warmth and comfort.

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
